Empowering Young Women through the Bloody Toll Project. November Event in Johannesburg

Empowering Young Women through the Bloody Toll Project: Coachability Foundation's August Event in Johannesburg

At the Coachability Foundation, we are on a mission to create positive change and empower communities. Our recent event on the 18th of August 2023 in Johannesburg was a significant step forward in achieving this mission through our "Bloody Toll Project".

The Mission of the Bloody Toll Project:

The "Bloody Toll Project" is our passionate response to the pressing issue of menstrual poverty and its wide-ranging effects on young women. In too many communities, young women face challenges due to limited access to menstrual hygiene products, missed educational opportunities, and the stigma surrounding menstruation.

Our mission with the "Bloody Toll Project" is clear: to break down these barriers, erase taboos, and provide essential menstrual hygiene products and education to those in need. We believe that every young woman should be able to pursue her dreams without the burden of menstrual poverty holding her back.

The Event in Reiger Park: Empowering 212 Young Women

Our event held at Reiger Park Primary School was an inspiring example of our mission in action. We had the privilege of hosting 212 enthusiastic and bright young girls from grade 6 and 7. This school is situated in Reiger Park, a community facing numerous challenges, including teenage pregnancies, and poverty, and gangsterism.

Despite these challenges, Reiger Park is also a community that has produced countless remarkable leaders and trailblazers, highlighting the power of resilience in the face of adversity.

During the event, we distributed 212 menstrual hygiene kits, each containing essential sanitary pads, to these young women. This simple act ensures that these girls can attend school with confidence, free from the constraints of menstrual poverty that can hinder their education and potential.

In addition to providing essential supplies, we held a brief but impactful information session. We discussed critical topics such as period poverty and its effects on young girls, menstrual hygiene, and the importance of understanding one's own body and the menstrual process. We encouraged these young girls not to be influenced by society's negative perceptions of menstruation but to seek better knowledge and understanding of this natural and essential aspect of their lives.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ronell Hartman, our dedicated coordinator of the Bloody Toll Project in Johannesburg. Your unwavering commitment, passion, and exceptional coordination were instrumental in making this event a success. Your efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of these young women and their community.

The "Bloody Toll Project" by the Coachability Foundation aligns with specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with detailed explanations:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

  1. Access to Menstrual Hygiene Products (Goal 3.1): The project ensures that young women have access to menstrual hygiene products, addressing a critical aspect of their health and well-being. Proper menstrual hygiene management is essential for preventing infections and discomfort.

  2. Awareness and Education (Goal 3.7): By conducting informative sessions on menstrual health, the project empowers young women with knowledge about their bodies, promoting safer and healthier practices during menstruation.

SDG 5: Gender Equality

  1. Equal Access to Education (Goal 5.5): Menstrual poverty often results in girls missing school during their periods. By providing menstrual hygiene kits, the project reduces this barrier, ensuring that girls have equal access to education, thus contributing to gender equality.

  2. Empowering Women (Goal 5.5): The project empowers young women by providing them with the tools and knowledge to manage their menstrual health effectively. This empowerment helps break down stereotypes and taboos surrounding menstruation.

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

  1. Proper Menstrual Hygiene Management (Goal 6.2): Access to menstrual hygiene products and education on proper hygiene practices contribute to better sanitation and hygiene, aligning with the goal of ensuring access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

  2. Reducing Waterborne Diseases (Goal 6.3): Effective menstrual hygiene management reduces the risk of waterborne diseases that can result from unhygienic practices during menstruation, thereby promoting better health.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

  1. Targeting Disadvantaged Communities (Goal 10.2): The project focuses on Reiger Park, a previously disadvantaged community facing various challenges. By providing support and resources to this community, it contributes to reducing inequalities within the area.

  2. Addressing Social Stigma (Goal 10.3): The project's educational sessions encourage young women not to be influenced by societal stigma and negative perceptions of menstruation. By challenging stereotypes, it works towards reducing inequalities and promoting inclusion.

In summary, the "Bloody Toll Project" directly aligns with SDGs 3, 5, 6, and 10 by addressing health and well-being, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and reducing inequalities through its efforts to provide menstrual hygiene products, education, and empowerment to young women in disadvantaged communities. These aligning actions contribute to achieving these critical global goals set by the United Nations.
