Women entrepreneurs in NL are more impact-oriented: their companies tackle more SDGs than companies

The number of women entrepreneurs in the Netherlands has increased by more than 60 per cent over the past decade, and now the Netherlands has more than 700,000 companies founded by women entrepreneurs. The numbers come from the SHE LEADS Dashboard 2023, researched and published by the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, part of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). The SHE LEADS Dashboard shows that these companies make a significant contribution to solving major societal issues: companies led by women are more impact-oriented and hold the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in high regard.

✓ Netherlands counts 62% more female entrepreneurs in a decade

✓ The number of female entrepreneurs in the Netherlands increased by over 60 percent in the past decade, though the share of female-owned businesses increased only marginally.

✓ In 2013, the Netherlands counted 441,734 female entrepreneurs. This year, there are 715,383 - an increase of 62 percent, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) Women's share in the total number of entrepreneurs only increased from 34 percent to 37 percent in that period. (2022 KVK)

✓ The difference with men has narrowed, and the proportion of women in top positions has slowly increased, according to the latest Emancipation Monitor from 2020.

✓ On the other hand, the difference in hourly wages for women and men has remained the same, and women still take on the lion's share of the (informal) care tasks. So there really is still work to be done if we strive for equality.

✓ Women entrepreneurs in NL are more impact-oriented: their companies tackle more SDGs than companies founded by men.

While the numbers of women entrepreneurs is increasing, they are still in the minority and are even still considered unconventional by some people in business – particularly when looking at the Dutch landscape for high-growth firms. But, the researchers say, this does not mean it will always be like this. Entrepreneurs are embedded in a cultural and institutional context, which is constantly evolving. If this becomes more inclusive, the whole system will adapt accordingly.
