Wise Advice by Heidi Roizen

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

"The entrepreneurial mind-set is that risk is the heightened probability that there is a big range of possible outcomes said Heidi Roizen".

Who is this #remarkable woman ?

Heidi has achieved success as an entrepreneur, executive, director, venture capitalist and educator. She has also held positions of leadership with a number of industry organizations, and is a recognized and popular spokesperson for the technology industry.

Today, Heidi is a partner with leading venture capital firm Threshold Ventures and serves as a board director for privately-held portfolio companies Planet, Zoox, Memphis Meats and Polarr.  Heidi is also a member of the boards of directors of DMGT, listed on the London Stock Exchange, and Invitation Homes, listed on the NYSE.  She also co-leads the Threshold Venture Fellows program in the Engineering Department at Stanford University and serves on the Advisory Council of Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.

Among her past activities, Heidi has been a partner at DFJ and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Venture Capital Association, where she served on the Executive Committee, chaired the annual conference and chaired the Public Outreach committee. She has served on numerous private and public company boards, including TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO) and Great Plains Software (was NASDAQ:GPSI until it was acquired by Microsoft.)

Before becoming a venture capitalist, Heidi served as Vice President of World Wide Developer Relations for Apple, where she was responsible for building and maintaining relationships between Apple and its developers. She and her 300-person team served as the primary contact point for major partners such as Microsoft, Intuit and Adobe, as well as thousands of other firms, emerging and established.

Heidi started her career as an early Silicon Valley pioneer, co-founding software company T/Maker in 1983 and serving as its CEO for over a decade until its acquisition by Deluxe Corporation (NYSE:DLX) in 1994.   During that time she also served on the Board of Directors and as president of the Software Publishers Association (now the Software Industry and Information Association - SIIA.)

Also active in nonprofit organizations, Heidi is a member of the advisory boards of the National Center for Women in Information Technology, and of Springboard Enterprises.  She is a past board member of the Stanford Alumni Association, where she served on its Trustee Nominating Committee for five years. Heidi is a frequent guest speaker at business schools across the country, and is the subject of a popular eponymous HBS case about building business networks.  In 2018, Heidi was named the "Financial Woman of the Year" by the Financial Women of San Francisco.

Heidi holds a degree in English from Stanford University (1980) and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business (1983).  She is the mother of two wonderful children, two needy rescue dogs, and spends whatever free time is left hiking in nature and pursuing her passion as a budding glass artist.
